Director of Engineering – JR05147

The Director of Engineering manages all aspects of the Broadcast Station and Digital Operations.  This position ensures that the station operates efficiently and in compliance with all federal, state and local agencies.  The Director of Engineering supervises all maintenance and IT staff.  This role oversees physical plant operations and improvements including all electronic television equipment as well as building-related issues.  This position ensures the department effectively and proactively services the station’s newscast and content operations. The Director of Engineering also develops foresight into the technical future of broadcasting and identifies cost reductions and business opportunities through technology.  This position is critical in the strategic plan for capital acquisitions for the broadcast station.

 

Essential Job Functions

25%  Manages personnel of the Technical Department and oversees maintenance of all station broadcast equipment to insure infrastructure is functional at all times.

20%  Manages the daily operations of the studio, digital assets and transmitter facilities including modernization, new construction, safety, and security.  Insures rapid response to unexpected issues in studio and field.

20% Initiates communication and effectively coordinates with staff and other departments to optimize the workflows needed to ensure clean, error-free, technical operations.  Participates in staff and editorial meetings and takes action to ensure information is disseminated between staff and other departments – news/promotion/production/digital.  Goes out on reporter/photographer assignments (including in Live, ENG and Production trucks) and other actions to optimize workflow, hardware and software operations.

10% Prepares and manages the annual fiscal operating budget for the technical department.  Ensures department spending is within or under budget.

10% Oversees project management of plant improvements, new construction and news/digital/production assignments, i.e. video transfer, editing, and archiving.  Ensures completion by estimated timeline and brings project in or under budget.

5% Maintains the physical plant (studio/transmitter) to acceptable levels of operational requirements by OSHA, FCC, federal, state and local agencies.  Performs hands-on technical equipment maintenance.

5% Prepares and manages the department and capital equipment budget.  Reviews equipment and facility requirements for purchase of additional and replacement items.

5% Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to, the engineering portion of the Strategic and Business Resumption plans, and compliance with corporate policies.

 

Minimum Qualifications and Job Requirements | All must be met to be considered.

 

Education:  Bachelor’s degree or trade school degree/diploma in electronics or broadcasting or equivalent technical training and / or experience.

 

Experience:  Previous employment in the capacity of Chief Engineer or minimum of 5 years as an Assistant Chief Engineer, in broadcasting, production, or institutional organization is preferred. Experience at a major news operation is highly desirable.

 

Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 

  • Possession of an FCC General Radiotelephone License or equivalent.
  • Certification in broadcast engineering desirable.
  • Should possess a general knowledge of all engineering fields including electrical, electronics, mechanical and civil engineering with a thorough understanding of electronics and broadcast engineering management.
  • Must have strong understanding of IT systems.
  • Thorough understanding of FCC rules and regulations.
  • Good leadership skills.
  • Ability to operate the station within an allotted budget.
  • Ability to design and implement changes to meet current and future plant needs.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of general labor relations. Demonstrated experience in organizing and motivating personnel.
  • Must be able to meet deadlines and work well under pressure.
  • Ability to identify how technology can reduce operating costs and provide new business opportunities.
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Limited travel; primarily local.
