Using Spreadsheets for Journalism

Learn Excel basics to help you be more effective as a journalist.

We’ll start at the very beginning: what kind of files can you open in a spreadsheet? What kind of story ideas can you find via sort, filter, PivotTable and basic arithmetic? Who’s the highest-paid state employee? Where is crime concentrated in Atlanta?

We’ll use Excel in this session for spreadsheet beginners. The tools you’ll learn will help you efficiently organize and visualize data – no complicated programming required!

Please bring your own laptop with Excel or Google Sheets, a free program. All spreadsheet software looks a little different, but we’re going to focus on basic functions that most of them have. Mac Numbers is not compatible for this event.

Hosted by Maggie Lee, a freelance state and local government reporter whose work has appeared in Creative Loafing, the Macon Telegraph and more.
